war broke out as the result of calculations and miscalculations made in the weeks following an incident in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina, on June 28, 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, nephew and heir to the Habsburg Emperor Franz Josef, and his wife, the Countess Sofia, were in the city for the summer maneuvers of the Austro Hungarian army. Members of "Young Bosnia," a secret society dedicated to liberating Slav lands from Habsburg rule, had laid plans for their assassination.
