The political theorist Charles Louis Montesquieu was born in 1689 in France and was nobility by birth. He succeeded his father as magistrate and lived during the Enlightenment. believed the justice system should be slow. Many things written by Montesquieu were in order to reform criminal law. He was a reformed for the Age of Enlightenment and believed slavery, torture and persecution because of religion are wrong. Punishments of his time were too harsh he said and people should be sentenced to things that cause shame and humiliation, not barbaric acts. Montesquieu was influential in politics and laws and has shaped society today.
