Once seizing government power in 1917, the Bolsheviks had found themselves under attack by surrounding enemies. Controlling less than a quarter of Russia's land, the Bolshevik party was determined to defend its power against counter revolution. They were disunited and unorganized. They had very ineffective leaders and their policies were unpopular among the people. The Bolsheviks were ruthless in their struggle for victory and in doing so, defended their government power from counter revolution during the course of the civil war.
