The people of Bali rely greatly on the production of rice as their means of survival. Rice farmers depended on water temples to set their irrigation schedules throughout the year. With the rapid growth in population throughout Bali the government implemented a new agricultural policy called the Green Revolution. Through the use of computers Lansing has proven that the Balinese system of water temples is a much more effective method of agriculture than the Green Revolution. It is clear that since the implementation of the Green Revolution the Balinese people have experienced severe consequences that would not have occurred with the water temple system.
