secure the flanks and beach exits of the assault area. Amphibious crafts landed 130,000 troops on five beaches along the 50 miles of the Normandy coast. In the eastern zone, the British and Canadians landed on the beaches GOLD, JUNO and SWORD. The Americans landed on two beaches in the west which were UTAH and OMAHA. This was the last major battle for the allies in WWII and showed Hitler that he could not win the war.
