…final situation worst. If the last paragraph where the family goes on the train ride in the city had been written with this alternate ending, Gregor would not have been mentioned even once. So basically this ending terminates all hope and wonder of what could have been, it was what is was and nothing else because there is no room for possibility as Gregor's death is met a few seconds after his understanding of reality.
