In what ways do social liberals seek to amend the classical liberal tradition? Are they right to do so?

Historians have defined the nature of liberalism in a variety of ways. Some feel liberalism is a cultural attitude; others believe it is the ideology of the rising bourgeoisie, many explaining it as opposition to excessive state power and a coherent body of principles based upon the idea of individual freedom. Through welfare some liberty will be sacrificed, but in this way, equality imposed in the right amount can it strike a satisfying balance with liberty. Essentially, social liberalism demands no more that the conclusion of the search to put flesh on the goal of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
