Martian Puryear, admires the labor of working purely with one's hands; I think that he responds to art of other cultures because it is based on a level of craft that has been forgotten in American culture, which is human labor without the use of machines and other technological shortcuts. unseen means of attachment/support, flowing form, or as in Timber's Turn, it's balanced in a way that it appears to defy gravity. At the same time there is a balance that is present in many of his pieces, this is sometimes calming and leaves me at piece to enjoy a work, and at other times it is disturbing to me and leaves me questioning my beliefs in what I had known to be reality.
