The Battle of the Atlantic was a battle during World War II for control of the routes used by Britain to move supplies across the Atlantic. The Battle of the Atlantic was started by the Germans. It was not a direct attack but an indirect attack. Britain, as an island country has always depended on sea-going trade. During WWII this was even more the case. March 1945, the German navy had 463 U-boats on patrol, compared to 27 at the beginning. Yet, more and more Canadian seamen were crossing the Atlantic to engage in battle closer to the enemy. Thousands of Canadian and allies lost their lives during the Battle of the Atlantic. Hundreds of thousands of tons of supplies were lost. On the date of May 4, 1945, Admiral Donitz ordered his U-boats to stop fighting. The Battle of the Atlantic was finally over.
